Vodafone becomes first Irish mobile network to launch 5G roaming across 100 destinations in Europe
24 December 2019
12 December 2019: Vodafone has become Ireland’s first mobile operator to offer 5G roaming to customers travelling across several destinations in Europe. From today, Vodafone 5G roaming is now available in 100 towns and cities across Spain, Germany, Italy and the UK - just in time for Christmas holidays abroad.
In addition, Vodafone’s 5G network is now live at Dublin Airport, making it Ireland’s first 5G connected airport. Visitors jetting in and out of Dublin will now avail of Vodafone’s super-fast 5G network, allowing them to download content and movies much quicker than ever before. As Vodafone 5G pricing is the same as 4G, RED Complete and RED Business customers will benefit from roaming with a faster and more reliable network in some of the most popular European tourist and business locations, at no additional cost.
Whether flying to Madrid, Munich, Rome or London, customers can stream music, download podcasts, watch live TV and sports and play games at speeds of up to ten times faster than 4G.
With an average of over 90,000 passengers travelling through Dublin airport daily, Vodafone’s 5G network will ensure passenger journeys are more enjoyable with seamless access to faster network speeds, lower latency and increased capacity.
Vodafone Ireland Technology Director Didier Clavero Perez said: “As the first mobile operator to launch commercial 5G in Ireland, Vodafone is delighted to build on this innovation and once again become the first mobile operator to offer 5G services abroad for our personal and business customers.
“At Vodafone, we are aware of the need for accessibility and at no point is that greater than when we are far away from home or work. We have therefore accelerated the availability of 5G roaming in time for the Christmas holidays. While travelling abroad, our customers will now find it even easier to keep in touch with loved ones at home and colleagues in the office.”
Welcoming the arrival of Vodafone’s 5G network to Dublin Airport, Carl Meehan Dublin Airport Infrastructure and Support said: “We’re thrilled Vodafone is launching 5G at Dublin Airport and that we’re the first airport in Ireland to have it. Dublin Airport is a hive of economic activity employing over 20,000 people and welcoming 90,000 passengers daily. We worked closely with Vodafone to have 5G available at the airport ahead of the busy Christmas season so all our travelling customers and those meeting them will find it easier to stay connected.”
Vodafone offers two 5G enabled smartphones for roaming purposes; the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and Samsung Galaxy A90 5G, which can be used at home and abroad across Vodafone’s 5G and 4G networks. In addition to Vodafone’s expanding 5G network, Vodafone customers can avail of 4G roaming in 154 destinations – more than any other network provider in Ireland. Customers will also be able to use their home plan in 57 European and overseas destinations at no extra cost.
Vodafone’s next generation 5G network will not only provide faster speeds for customers, but it is set to have a huge impact on technology use and adoption in nearly every industry across Ireland.
Live across locations in Cork, Limerick, Dublin, Galway and Waterford, Vodafone will continue expanding the network to further locations in Ireland over the coming months.
Vodafone’s new 5G network consists of fully standardised Ericsson 5G, which is being deployed over Vodafone Ireland’s 5G spectrum. Using Ericsson Radio System, this game-changing network will support many new technologies - including artificial intelligence, the internet of things, connected cities and self-driving cars.
